Schmidt and Pang Architects
Many architects focus on design as their ‘raison d’etre’. However, at Schmidt & Pang Architects, a small team lead by Roger Schmidt and Naomi Pang, it’s the much bigger picture that comes with delivering a project, irrespective of scale. Having designed and delivered multiple high-rise apartments, and other educational buildings, as well as homes for retirement living, the practice fully understands that creating architecture goes well beyond a schematic drawing. Both graduates in architecture – Schmidt from RMIT University and Pang from the University of Tasmania – the duo have also had the experience of working in large practices, at the helm of major infrastructure projects. And while the more corporate world of architecture was replaced with the romantic idea of a studio above a shopfront, the notion of delivering service in the broader meaning of the word, has been integral to the practice since it was established in 2012.
About us
With experience in urban design as much as in architecture, Schmidt & Pang has an innate understanding of not only the mechanics within each building, but as importantly, the processes required to deliver each project well-beyond a client’s expectations. And while the practice is familiar with the word ‘yield’, a term often used by a developer or builder keen to maximise their return, it also understands whether the vision – be it for a developer or an individual wanting to build their own home – can be achieved within an allocated budget. The ‘buildability’ factor not only extends to structures and materials, the realm of most architects, but as importantly often the council and legal parameters that can inhibit a project well before any documents or transactions are agreed to. For Schmidt & Pang, not taking these precautions will ultimately impinge on the success of any project that comes into the studio.
